How to Choose the Right Startup for You

A common mistake people make when looking for jobs is accepting the first job offer they get or the one that offers them the most money. Without really looking into all their options and finding the right fit for them.

Accepting a job offer is almost like agreeing to marry someone. And in reality you will spend more time at work than with your actual spouse. So you need to spend time finding the right one for you.

Startups are especially important because you are building a company. You are creating the culture and values of the company, too. You need to make sure you are working with a startup that is the right fit for you. Here are five questions you should consider when deciding on a position.

#1 Are you passionate about the Startup and your position?


There are so many different startups out there and they are all have amazing visions and goals for the company.  Make sure you do your research and find a startup that is working toward something you are really interested in.

Confucius said “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” This is so true. Do not settle for just going to work everyday.

Find a startup that is doing something great and makes you proud and excited to work for. This includes your specific position and the company as a whole. Figure out “What is the work you cannot do” and find your dream company that will help you do it.

#2 Do you agree with the values of the company?


In addition to agreeing with the company’s goals you must agree with how they are achieving their goal.

Do you agree with the fundamental values of the company and the leaders of the startup? Will you work well in the structure of the company? Theses are just some of the things to look into when researching and ask about when you are being interviewed.

#3 Do you agree with the interview process?


You can tell a lot from about a startup from their interview process. From the application, interview structure, when and how they contact you back.

One company I interview for, the interviewer read every question from a packet and wrote down every word I said in what looked like a standardized test booklet. Basically they just wrote down what I said and someone who I never met before hired me for a position at a location with people I had also never met before. Needless to say I did not accept the job offer.

I took the job where I was able to have a conversation with the interviewer and get a feel for the company. I learned about their experience with the company and why they enjoy working there. The same person interviewed me and introduced me to who I would be working with. And we discussed what area I would work in.

That is right. I got to be apart of the decision on where I would be placed. These are the perks of working with a smaller company. You are interviewing the company just as much if not more than they are interviewing you.

#4 How will this help you get your next job?


Some of the best advice I ever received from a boss is “Before you take any job, ask yourself what you will get out of it?”

This is not selfish. You are responsible for your own career.

Make sure that every step you take in career is in the right direction. If you are not moving vertically it should at least be a lateral move in a new area you want to transition to.

Never sell yourself short, and make sure you are taking control of your career. This also refers to paying your dues in a job that will lead you to your dream job. You have to build your skills and experience sometimes, but make sure the job will allow you to live up to your creative potential.

Think about how this new job will lead to your next job. In the interview ask what potential growth you will have to move up in the company. The great thing about startups is you learn much.You are building a company from the ground up, that experience should allow you to move up in the company in the future, help you find your next great job opportunity, or create your own startup.

#5 What about the team?


Startups are very close knitch companies so it is even more important to make sure you mesh well with the team you will be working with. They will be your new family so make sure you can work and communicate with them well.

With startups, you should be able to meet the team you could be working with during the interview process. The reason? The team and you can see if you are the right fit for the team.
